Big Cat, Small Cat - Practical Tips from two mother-in-laws [#Short Story]

Big  Cat Small Cat - She Knows Her Mind

By Viji Bellie

Leena entered her destined place as a new bride. She was married to Shyam the day before yesterday. She was so tired with her marriage rituals and with her hectic schedule for the past one week. She really needed a sound sleep. How could she expect this in this new atmosphere especially being the centre of attraction?

She looked around for her husband hoping to get a chance to nap a bit. At some distance he seemed to be busy arranging some things with the help of his close friends. She could understand his exhaustion too but as he was engaged in such activities he seemed to be managing his exhaustion to some extent. But being here with her  own relatives on a big and beautiful mattress she was unable to cope with her position as a brand new bride. If only she could rest a little bit…

Noticing all these from the distance, Shyam's grand mother Parvadham came towards Leena. From the beginning of her marriage proposal, Leena noticed that Shyam's grand mother was the 'Queen’ of this family and rightly so. Grandma Parvadham was smart. She was tall with a wheatish healthy build with an elegant dressing sense. Her husband Rajagopal was always proud of his position as being her King. All soft skills in her seem to be in the right proportion with her diplomacy in handling people of all age and the situations of all kind, in a graceful manner. Naturally she was a close yet strict friend to everyone in the family.

Watching grand mother Parvadham walking towards her, Leena became a bit nervous. As a gesture of respect Leena tried to be on her feet. But Parvadham with a smiling face kept her hand on Leena's shoulder and gestured her to sit down."Leena, You look very tired. Go upstairs and rest for a while. You can join us for lunch later. We shall take care of your relatives." Then she gestured one of her relatives to take Leena to the bedroom upstairs.

Leena was so relieved. She went upstairs. The room seemed to be comfortable. In a corner there was a medium size bed which was covered with a light colored designed bed spread which looked inviting to Lenna. She happily settled down and slept.

After a sound sleep Leena woke up. She was so relaxed that she started  humming her favourite tune as she adjusted her dress and hair before going downstairs. Before she realized, Shyam entered into the room smiling. Leena didn’t know what to say and started blushing.

Shyam said,'Do you know how many times I raced up and down to see if my angel was ready for lunch? But we must appreciate my grand mother's timely concern for your power nap. How do you feel now my sweet heart?" Blushing again Lenna said,"I am so sorry! I couldn't control my sleep. I must thank your grand mother.” With a smile and a nod, Shyam took her hand and led her down for lunch with the rest of the family.

They reached the dining table where almost all relatives finished having their lunch. Leena could sense the teasing smile of the both families. Before things got complicated Parvadham came forward and held Leena's hand, "It's all right my child. Hope you feel better now. We all had our lunch. Never mind. You can enjoy your lunch with your husband." She winked at Leena.

The next day all the relatives of the bride left Leena behind with so many suggestions. In fact Leena couldn't remember many things. Leaving everything behind she tried her best to be present in the present.

Both Shyam and Leena had almost fifteen days in hand out of thirty days sanctioned for their marriage by their respective offices. They had to consult among themselves and with their family members about their honeymoon dates as the new couple were invited for lunch or dinner to the houses of various relatives. While talking with her family members, Leena found out that Shyam's parents Krishna kumar and Seetha both being a working couple, didn’t find any difficulty with their every day's schedule at home as well as at their working place. Seetha was also very comfortable as a daughter-in-law in that house.

The open secret was disclosed very practically in the next few days. Leena soon learnt that all family members honoured their roles. They respected each other. No egos, no pretensions, no complexes and certainly no negative vibrations. Hearty inquiries by every one about everything like have you had nice sleep? or How is your project going? Both Parvadham and Seetha, before they went to bed scheduled their next two days program with their family members. Starting from their breakfast menu everything was discussed in detail. This planned schedule lead to the smooth sailing of the family.

During the discussions they consulted the whole family members whether they were comfortable with their own schedule. First and third week end of a month would be the senior couple's week end (Rajagopal and Parvadham). The second and fourth week end would be the junior couple's week end (Krishna kumar and Seetha's). While the former took care of the home the latter couple had that day to take a break and do whatever they wanted to do. The next week the senior couple took a break. This plan gave the whole family a good space and privacy and they had many rich experiences together.

One evening, Seetha was in the kitchen preparing some evening snacks for the family. Leena entered the kitchen to help her mother-in-law. Seetha turned to Leena,"So you people enjoyed your holidays nicely. Didn't you? "Of course ma" Leena replied with happiness. Watching her happy face Seetha continued, "You are looking so happy. Preserve this happiness for ever. This is the pride of this family. I would like to say one thing. Would you lend your ear to me?" Seetha asked in a genuine voice.

"I am always ready to lend my ear ma! Please go ahead" Leena said politely. Seetha very casually continued as if she was talking to her close friend,"Leena, since your arrival to this beloved family, your observation of our family matters seems to be a good signal for me to discuss this matter with you personally. You see!I would like you to know that, we family members do not come between you and Shyam, you and your birth place, you and your friends and you and your office. In the same way if you don't let all these relations to come between us,I mean between you and this beautiful family for the sake of the pride of this family, I feel this is the best way to honor our roles. All these years I have been following this strategy and it works. How do you feel about this suggestion.?"

"Wonderful ma! As a living example you are here, following that fantastic strategy to run this family successfully. The day you people selected me for Shyam, I started loving our beloved family. True love of our family members brings miracles into our family. I promise I will do my best to be a good family partner." Seetha hugged her daughter -in-law as if she was her own daughter. Rightly Leena also felt so.

After having their evening snacks with coffee, Parvadham called Leena for a walk. Leena could understand that like Seetha her mother -in-law, Seetha's mother-in-law wanted to say something to her too. Leena couldn't help admiring Parvadham's strong nature. She wondered how it was possible for an eighty year old lady to cope with all family members preserving her own pride and prestige. They reached the nearby park.

They seated comfortably on a park bench and enjoyed watching people of different age playing different games. Leena waited for some time. She could sense Parvadham's ‘how to start’ expression. Holding Parvadham's hand,"Would you like to say something grandma?" Leena asked politely. With a calculating look Parvadham said,"How shrewd you are my child! Yes I would like to say something but I wonder with what words I can fill up this generation gap."

"Not with words grandma, with love. Love can fill any generation gap” said Leena with a smiling face.

“My God! Thanks a lot. Our family is blessed with a shrewd and sensible grand daughter” said Parvadham. She kept her warm palm on Leena’s plump cheek, "My child I needn't say anything else. You are a born well wisher.A born well wisher would bring all forms of wealth to a family." She continued.

“Assume you are a small cat. Your elders are the big cats. I mean let your parents-in-laws be Tiger and Tigress. Let them have their own pride and prestige. Never let them down. Respect them. Be a good listener. One day you will learn all tactics and strategies through proper training from them either directly or indirectly to become a big cat I mean a Tigress yourself to rule and support your family when the proper time comes. You will have the same capability to guide your next generation small cats to become big cats. Have I made myself clear?”

"Hundred Percent grandma"Leena assured her. To her surprise both ladies uttered the same suggestion with different version for the welfare of the family. Leena silently took a resolution that whether she was in the position of small cat or big cat she must put her whole efforts to strengthen her family. She knew she was not alone. Seetha ma and grandma Parvatham were always by her side. She couldn’t ask for a better family. Together Lenna and Parvadham gazed at the children playing in the park as the sun set behind them promising thousands of better tomorrows.

Why Are Bedtime Stories Powerful? [#Short Story]

Bedtime stories - She Knows Her Mind

By Viji Bellie

On that particular day, my mind was not in the place where it should have been. My morning brisk hours were not good hours as my mind was complicating everything and time was being wasted with my inability to control it. Four of us, myself and my husband and my two daughters who were ten and five years old were wasting the precious morning hours, yelling at each other because it was already late.

I have to come out of this mind-set first, I thought to myself. I was a home maker. I could relax later where as my husband and daughters were in a position to start their office time and school time with a positive mood. My husband was the technical manager in a private textile mill. His boss had a good faith on him. My husband's roles were crucial in his company. He was to be in a position of balanced mindset with no unwanted oscillations in it. Definitely it would affect the employees of the concern and their performances. But I was proud to accept this fact that compared to me, my husband's tolerance was and is, always at a greater height.

Grumbling a little, I got them ready for their respective roles ahead but with a little delay. My husband tried his best to bring some cheers on my daughters' faces, "Darling girls! As to-day is our grand father’s second death anniversary, the thoughts of our grand dad seems to be on her mind. She misses her loving dad so much as we do. So she is unable to get us ready in time. But you see! We are here to help each other and bring some cheers to each other. All right! As you missed your school bus, I will accompany you to your school. Today evening I will turn up earlier and we shall go to the park where we all are going to enjoy with our favourite ice-creams. Now hug your mother and get ready to leave for school." The girls hugged me and walked out of the door. Then my husband gave me a hug and they were off to their respective places.

By evening I tried my best to come back to normalcy, but I was not able to do so. Later my husband turned up earlier (he had availed special permission to come home early) and we all went to a nearby restaurant and had our coffee with our favourite snacks. We reached the park. We decided to have our ice-cream later and my daughters went to play with some of the children in the park. As I was looking around blankly, my husband took my hands into his, "Darling! Really this big loss of our good and close relation is painful to the core. Your dad had been a good father -in-law to me too. As death is a horrible truth we have to survive the loss in one way or the other. I know you will miss your dad for your life time. But at the same time you think about your mom's position. Nearly forty years they had been together with such an intimacy and mutual respect. But she has been trying her best to cover up all her pains and tries her best to make up that heavy loss for the sake of you and your siblings. She always says "Here I am for your needs. Learn it from her."

During our hard times, supportive company is really a boon. Even then I was unable to recover back my normalcy. All through the evening my daughters seemed to be watching me. We had ice-creams and came back home. By the time we reached home, it was time for dinner and bed. That night, my daughters were waiting for me for the usual bed time story. But on that day I didn't feel like telling any such story. I fell on the bed. My daughters, my angels settled on my either side. Elder one said, "Mom! I would like to ask you one thing. Shall I?” I turned to her with an exhausted tone, "Go ahead."

"Mom! I think at present, your terms with God are not good." With shock and surprise I raised my head. She continued, "You told me in a bed time story, when I was in my first standard that once a small child was in a good rapport with God. The pleased God appeared before him to grant his wish.

The child said ,"God! My only wish is to be with you always."

God said, "You are always with me, my child!"

The child said, "I would like to know your presence always."

God said, "All right! Whenever and wherever you go, you alone can spot my foot prints along with yours."

The child was so happy and he became more faithful to God day by day. Even when he became older, he could spot the God's foot prints along with his foot prints. One day suddenly he couldn't spot the God's foot prints. He became so sad.

He prayed to God and asked him. "God you promised to be with me all through my life. But now I could find only my foot prints. Did you leave me?”

God said, "Look at the ground carefully, my child. The foot prints on the ground are not yours. They are mine. As you are old now, you are unable to walk. So I am taking you in my safe hands and I am helping you to continue your journey."

My elder daughter, still sitting close to me told, "Mom! You told me if we are good, we can also sense God's guidance and His help which will always come along with us like those God's foot prints. More over if someone is really good, they go to the safe hands of God. So naturally our grand father must be in the safe hands of God. He was a good man. Whenever we visited our native place he took us and our cousins to various picnic places and offered us a variety of fruits and sweets which are not available here. He taught us and our cousins many fun games. He made us understand that fighting among ourselves was not good. Being together is only good. So you must be happy and not sad as our loving grand father is in the safe hands of God."

Hearing this version of my daughter, I understood that we cannot reverse death. The loss of a loved one is indeed painful and creates a void in our hearts. But I knew what my daughter said was also true. The knowledge that my father was in his safe heaven was comforting to me. The story that I once narrated to my daughters as kids, was given back to me when I needed it badly.  I realised how powerful bedtime stories were. They inculcate strong values in tender minds which last for their lifetime. I hugged my angel daughters to my heart and cried silently with relief.

How to Create and Maintain Successful Relationships

Relationships - She Knows Her Mind

By Scindhia Hallan

Relationships are the lifeline to a wholesome life. To build a true relationship is a huge task in itself. Sustaining it through the years is totally another story. But at the end of the day, where would we be if we didn’t have people to love, yell at, play, dance, cry and call out during a crisis? We are all linked in the universe bound by the laws of nature. Only we are either too short sighted to see the actual picture or too arrogant to realize that we all need relationships to survive. That’s why we find many aged people bend a little in a relation than break the entire relationship for they know how the system works.

Make a choice

How would life be if we alone existed with a lot of luxuries but no one to enjoy it with? In many cases, it shows a side to us that we didn’t even know existed. For instance, do we behave the same way with friends as we do within a family? Is the relationship between two siblings similar to a parent-child relationship? The answer: its not. And that’s where exactly the fun is. Deciphering the relationship and understanding it is key. Accepting or not is a choice. Do we make the right choices all the time and stick with the right relationships? The answer again: no. But life itself is gracious enough to give us a chance – a chance to know where we went wrong, a chance to correct it, a chance to mend ways or a chance for new beginnings. But we must be ready to take that chance that is handed out to us.  Make wise choices even if you have missed making them the first time.

Create love

When we love ourselves sufficiently we have excess to give out to others. When we have sufficient love for our own family, it then extends to the close relatives, then the distant relatives and finally the society. Learn to love yourself unconditionally first. Then move onto the next stage. Start with a friendly smile. Your small kindness gestures might mean the world to someone else. Don't hesitate to spread love within the known circle or to a complete stranger. Believe in random acts of kindness. The world has a system of Karma that works in mysterious ways. Believe in miracles and that the greatest miracle of all is love. When your thoughts about the people around you are positive, you will attract those people towards you more deeply. The connections take time, but they will surely happen. Relationships are like a security check in a lot of ways. Not only it gives us an inner strength to know that so many people love us at so many levels, it also establishes the fact that we are never truly alone. There will always be somebody to guide us when we are confused or in need.

Give and Take

True relationships take an awful lot of time and effort to build. It trains our heart, softens or sometimes hardens our emotions. But once built, they last till the end of time guarding us all through the ups and downs of life. Be it money or love, you receive what you give out. Why should a relationship be any different? Like all the good things in life, building and maintaining relationships is hard work. Healthy 'give and take' will make it strong. Taking comes naturally to us, but giving must be trained. Are we giving more than we take? Do we even consciously monitor that difference? It is easy to overlook something that comes our way with very little effort. It is human nature to be fixated on things that are hard to get. But giving more is the only way a relationship will survive and it applies to both the parties. Learning to overlook minor differences and getting together to celebrate solid similarities go a long way in making a bond.

 Accept the whole

Every relation is unique and special in its own way. Even friendship is not the same. The way we behave with one friend is totally different from the way we behave with another. Each relationship is a recipe. Remember that we cannot live on one taste alone. We need sugar (sweet memories), chillies (big fights), pepper(small tiffs), salt(unconditional love)  and all other ingredients to make one tasty meal. A relationship that has shared the smiles and has weathered the storms will learn to be patient. A relationship is at its best when the other person learns to accept you for who you are and loves you for what you mean to him or her. By acceptance, I do not mean the mere acceptance of the positive side. It should the acceptance of that person as a whole and the ability to love someone even with all their faults. Expectations, fun, smiles, tears, disappointments, fears all come together here. But both of them involved have to make an effort to keep the ball rolling. No one person alone can make a relationship successful. As they say you need two to tango.

Invest

I wonder why they call it investing in a relationship. It sounds more business like, isn’t it? But when you look at it closely ‘invest’ is such a powerful word. You have to gradually put in all the things that mean so much to you in the relationship to make it strong and worthy. True relationships are uncovered in extreme situations most of the times. In happier times all seem good to us. But how many of relations come forward to help us or lend a shoulder during distressed times? Working on a relationship is a conscious effort. The biggest not to say fatal mistake we all easily make is to take things for granted. It is too precious to be taken for granted. What does taking for granted mean actually? When you are more ‘taking’ in a relationship than ‘giving’. Such a passive relation in the long term becomes stale and ends up breaking more than one heart. Love is special; while unconditional love is extraordinary and few and far between. Those are the ones that you should make an additional effort to celebrate and cherish.

Be Grateful

The most underrated key value in a relationship is gratitude. Think of all those who have touched your lives positively in some way or the other. Be thankful for their love and support. Gratitude keeps us grounded. It spreads love and happiness automatically. It builds goodwill in your personal account. Most importantly be vocal about your gratitude. Saying thank you is one of the basic manners we teach our kids. But how many of us as adults really follow it? Start saying thank you aloud and you will start seeing a lot of positive people around you.

The Two-way street

Understanding a relationship is the basic part of building it. Appreciating the relationship is a mature way of looking at it. We need people and people need us. That’s the basic truth. To be rich in relationships is a blessing, for you will have the greatest contacts and the strongest network of protection around you. A good relationship is a two way street which is open to love and healthy debates from both the directions for a long time to come.

How to keep the ball rolling?

- Call that close friend/relative whom you have been meaning to but never called

- Write that letter to your grandparents in your hometown

- Send a thank you for being such wonderful parents card to your parents

- Tell your brother/sister how much you love him/her
